Máscara de Lobo de Encías Rojas / Red-Gummed Wolf Mask, 1960's
Authentic 1960s wolf dance mask with red gums, hand-carved and painted in Guerrero. This piece represents a hunting dog, wolf, or coyote, designed specifically for the Dance of the Tecuanes (or variants from the Nahuatl region of Guerrero). The choreography narrates the efforts of a community of farmers and hunters to capture a jaguar (Tecuani, meaning "the one who eats people" or wild beast) that attacks their livestock. In the traditional story, the hunters use tracking dogs to locate the beast's lair. The dancer wearing this mask portrays that protective animal.
This piece is sourced from Bazar de Lalo, our flagship partner in Cuernavaca, Mexico. For decades Cuernavaca has attracted artists, intellectuals, and collectors from around the world, creating a pocket of rich culture and artistry. Bazar de Lalo, the 10 year old creation of artist Lalo Lugo, taps into this depth: an immersive space where antiques, folk art, and rare crafts converge into a breathtaking catalogue. Their sourcing and experience ensure that every piece we list is authentic, and that your piece comes from the heart of Mexico, with a story.
