Máscara Pilato / Pilate Mask, 1940's
Pilato (Moor) dance mask in carved tzompantle wood, Puebla, circa 1940. This mask corresponds to the antagonist character of Pilate, also known as the Moor, in the community dance-theater of the Puebla region; these characters lead the dance troupes and ritually represent the challenges and battles of the spiritual conquest. The bright red face denotes ferocity, transgression, or a pagan nature, reinforced by the exaggerated arched black eyebrows extending toward the temples.
