Máscara Devoradora Jaguar / Jaguar Devourer Mask, 1970's
Jaguar devourer dance mask in hand-carved polychrome wood. This composition, an animal with a skull emerging from its jaws, has entirely pre-Hispanic roots. It represents the duality between life and death, or the concept of the Nahual, the animal spirit that protects or devours the human being. Such complex pieces with integrated skulls were often used in the dance of the Tlacoleros or in local variations of the dances of the devils and of death, where the jaguar acts as a force of nature or a collector of souls.
This piece is sourced from Bazar de Lalo, our flagship partner in Cuernavaca, Mexico. For decades Cuernavaca has attracted artists, intellectuals, and collectors from around the world, creating a pocket of rich culture and artistry. Bazar de Lalo, the 10 year old creation of artist Lalo Lugo, taps into this depth: an immersive space where antiques, folk art, and rare crafts converge into a breathtaking catalogue. Their sourcing and experience ensure that every piece we list is authentic, and that your piece comes from the heart of Mexico, with a story.
