Lalo Lugo, Bazar de Lalo

Lalo Lugo is a Cuernavaca-based artist, curator, and creator of Bazar de Lalo, an immersive space where antiques, folk art, and rare crafts converge. Located in the heart of Cuernavaca, a two minute walk from the central square, the Bazar has a piece of everything - from jewelry and ceramics to decorative costumes and masks.

The idea for the Bazar started ten years ago. When Lalo would be working in his studio, there were always fellow artists, friends, and curious guests passing through. He recognized an interest not just in his paintings but in the items he had come across. The Bazar grew naturally from that energy.

Lalo sources for the shop the same way he paints: with the same eye, the same instincts, the same philosophy. In his words: "The things I find for my shop are the same things that inspire my work. It's all related."

Cuernavaca is at the core of both. For decades the city has drawn artists, intellectuals, and collectors from around the world, many of whom left behind homes full of extraordinary objects. Lalo has spent years navigating those collections — hand-painted clay figures from 1950s Guerrero, 19th-century embroidered textiles — always looking for the same thing. "It's something you feel, not just see."

That same sensibility runs through his paintings. Working with layers of antique textiles, embroidery, and mixed media, he builds canvases that carry a story in their very structure. His studio — now supported by a small team of artists — produces large-format works that have been shown across Mexico, from his first exhibition at the Casona Spencer in Cuernavaca to upcoming shows in Mexico City.

Mercado Mexicano and Bazar de Lalo partnered so that customers can find authentic, one of a kind pieces, and stories, that you can't find anywhere else. When pieces from Bazar de Lalo + Mercado Mexicano find homes in the United States or beyond, Lalo sees it as another chapter in each object's ongoing story. "In a way," he says, "we are sentinels of time. We must take care of important things across time and find the right people for them."
